Success In the Movie Industry Between 2010–2020
Let’s rewind and think of all the movies that have been released the past decade. What type of movies really stand out? In my opinion, Disney had a monster of a decade. As someone who grew up in the 90’s, I would have to say Disney created the best childhood movies in that decade. They produced Lion King, Beauty and the Beast, Toy Story, and so many more well known classics! But with the acquisition of LucaFilms, Pixar, and Marvel, Disney has seen incredible box office numbers and has shattered almost all other film industries. Films like Avengers, Spiderman, Ralph Breaks the Internet are overwhelming the biggest hits of the decade. Let’s take a look back at the previous decade to see what Disney has accomplished these past 10 years and how it is known to be The Disney Decade.
What is The Disney Decade? Cinema folks will remember this decade as the Disney Decade because of Disney movies being released month after month and not to forget how successful majority of the movies are. They reanimated and produced remakes of the classic movies in the 90s. Though not all of them were as good as the classics, they still brought in huge box office numbers. People from the 90’s rushed to movie theaters to reminiscence their childhood and family bring their kids to show them what they are missing. My friend once told me Disney will eventually take over the world and now I’m starting to believe it.
We first take a look at the most popular and the highest profit margin movies. Disney movies, mainly Marvel films, has appeared several times. Disney acquired Marvel Entertainment in 2009 for $4B and in 2019, Disney’s investment has net them $18B from the box office alone. The success of Marvel has helped Disney achieved unreachable numbers. Avengers: Infinity War is the most profitable film with a profit margin of $1.75B and most popular film.
I did an analysis to see what makes a film successful. I created a scatter plot to show the relationship between popularity and profit margin. The correlation coefficient is 0.59 interpreted as moderately positive. This tells us when movie popularity increases, movie profit margin also increases.
Let’s take a look at movies created for each genre and see what type of drama film studios are producing the most of.
Based on the top popular and highest gross margin movies, it’s surprising to see Drama as the highest produced movie genre. Now let’s take a look at the highly rated films…
This plot shows there’s a few international films that are highly voted. Do international films not like Disney films as much as the United States, and would prefer Drama genres? According to the data, it appears that is the case with the exception of the anomaly Avengers.
From the success of Disney in the past decade, we wonder what type of films they will release next. Marvel movies are going to continue to reign supreme until who knows how long. But what exactly will be the next big hit outside of Marvel?
